Lodging Occupancy in Michigan, Detroit and the United States for March 2010CHART 1, below, graphs the monthly occupancy rates of lodging properties in Detroit, Michigan, and the United States for the past two years, as reported by Smith Travel Research (STR). It illustrates that Michigan and Detroit trail the nation, in terms of hotel/motel occupancy rates.
However, CHART 2, below, graphs the month-to-same-month, one-year earlier percentage changes in occupancy rates for Detroit, Michigan, and the United States during the past two years. This chart clearly illustrates that since last September the recovery of the lodging industry in Michigan has been out-pacing the recovery of the lodging industry at the national level. Since November, Detroit has been recovering at even a faster rate than all of Michigan.
In March 2010, the most recent month for which data exist, hotel/motel occupancy in Michigan increased by 6.8%, as compared to the same month in 2009. Forty-five other states registered an improvement in occupancy rate when comparing March to one year earlier. Michigan’s hotel/motel occupancy rate for the month of March registered 44.8%, lower than the national hotel/motel occupancy rate of 57.9%. Only two states registered lower occupancy rates than Michigan in March, South Dakota (43.3%) and Wyoming (43.8%). With a year-to-date hotel/motel occupancy rate of 42.7% at the end of the third month of 2010, Michigan ranked 43rd out of the 50 states. The top three states in terms of year-to-date hotel/motel occupancy rates were Hawaii (70.8%), Florida (64.8%) and Arizona (61.5%). Occupancy year-to-date in the U.S. stood at 51.9%. Detroit’s hotel/motel occupancy rate for the month of March 2010 registered 50.2%, up from 44.6% a year earlier, for a month-to-same-month improvement of 12.7%. In this category, Detroit ranked higher than only one of the 25 largest U.S. Markets—Norfolk-VA Beach, VA (46.8%). Detroit’s year-to-date hotel/motel occupancy rate of 47.6% at the end of the third month of 2010 registered 11.7% higher than the 42.6% registered at the end of March 2009. As is typical, the overall U.S. year-to-date hotel/motel occupancy rate of 51.9% was lower than the year-to-date occupancy of the 25 largest U.S. Markets taken together (59.5%).
